How early can you check your luggage at the airport?

Can you answer bittsen2000’s question about Luggage?:

I am leaving from San Diego at 3:30PM but check out of my hotel by 11AM.
Since I don’t have a car, I was thinking about dropping my luggage off at the airport at 8AM and then going sightseeing till 2PM.

Will the airport accept my luggage that early?

Luggage Feedback: I believe once you check your baggage in you have to stay in the airport…i think the norm is at least 1 1/2-2 hours to check in and it depends on how busy the airport is you might have to stand in line for awhile if its busy

Luggage Feedback: there’s no way they’ll let you officially check in your baggage that early. the very most, i would say, is probably like 3 hours before the flight. what i would probably do is check out of your hotel at 8 am… and tel them to keep your luggage in their luggage hold until you return to the hotel at like noon. then go from there to the airport.

Luggage Feedback: It depends on your airline. You could call and ask them or look on their website (or update your question), but most let you check in only 3-4 hours in advance.

I would definitely ask your hotel if they have a luggage storage room.

A travel site suggests that the Greyhound terminal in the heart of downtown San Diego (120 W Broadway) has luggage lockers. You’d have to pay for them ($2 for 6 hours, another site says), but at least you wouldn’t have to lug your bags around all day sightseeing (BTDT, don’t recommend it).

Luggage Feedback: Why don’t you just ask the hotel for a late check out? Most hotels will give you an extra few hours if you request it a day or two ahead of time, some will charge you for it though. Or as one of your previous answers said, leave your luggage with the bell captain or concierge after you check out, I do this all the time when I have a flight after check out time, and I’ve never stayed in a hotel that said no. Otherwise, you should probably call the airline to find out what the earliest time you can check-in for your flight is, only they can tell you for sure what time you can check-in.

Luggage Feedback: Your hotel may let you check out late, and even if not, you can leave your luggage at the hotel for the day. But you can probably check it in a few hours early. And there’s really nothing that says you can’t leave the airport once you check your luggage.
