What should I consider when buying new luggage?

Answered By Editor

Today's luggage offers a variety of choices, both stylish and functional. Consider which is the best style for your type of travel. Decide between a travel backpack, duffel bag, wheeled suitcase or traditional suitcase. You'll want to shop around. Look for discount outlets. You may find the same quality luggage as high-end luggage stores at a fraction of the cost.

Look inside each suitcase you are thinking of purchasing. Will the inside compartments give you plenty of room? Also check how the frame is made. Does it use fiberglass, aluminum or some other durable plastic? The bag should have a sturdy, lightweight frame.

Zippers and seams often pose problems for luggage. Look for a strip of reinforcing cloth on each side of the zipper. This makes the zipper more durable. Also look for bags whose seams are taped. While you're at it, ensure that all zippers and locks function properly.

Out of what material is the bag made? Cordura or ballistic nylon fabrics are weatherproof. This may be an issue.

Determine the weight of the bag. Weight is becoming an increasing issue as airlines are reducing weight allowances. Some bags are quite heavy, even when empty.

Where will you be walking with your luggage? If you will be in places like Venice or eastern European cities with cobblestone streets or uneven pavement, you should consider a bag with larger wheels. These go over bumps and curbs more easily.
