How can I more easily find my luggage on the baggage carousel?

Answered By Editor

You'll find plenty of advice online telling you to put a colorful tag on your luggage. Or, they will suggest you tie a colorful ribbon or strip of some kind around the handle of your luggage. This is not the best of advice, as these kinds of ties often come off in the handling of your luggage.

You'll have a much easier time retrieving your bags from the baggage carousel if you put a distinctive, colorful, tie-down strap around your bag. This will help you to more easily spot your bag on the carousel, and it will reduce the chance of someone accidentally grabbing your luggage. Make sure that the strap is on snuggly and that the extra length is securely tucked. Otherwise, it could get stuck on conveyor belts and other cracks.

You can get tie-down straps at WalMart or at hardware type stores. Store the tie-down inside your luggage to be ready for your next trip.

There is one other option. If you are willing to do this to your luggage it can actually be more effective than tie-down straps. Using bright paint, artistically mark all six sides of your luggage or roller bag. Luggage never seems to come out with the same side showing, so you have to mark all sides.

Clever strapping or bright luggage tags are frequent victims of automated baggage handling systems, so they shouldn't be your only means of locating your luggage.
